After returning from vacation, you find mold in your home: does insurance cover it? Alfredo went on vacation to Europe with his whole family. Upon returning from the trip rested and happy, when he entered his house he perceived a strong odor. The hallway carpet was covered in dark mold. A condensation pipe from the new air conditioner had started to leak and the accumulated moisture made for an excellent environment for mold to grow.
Rosa, Alfredo’s wife, suggested that he call the insurance “to see if this damage was covered.” Indeed, after the claim, the insurer took over the repair of the air conditioning tube and the damage caused.
Although mold is usually not covered by insurance, a sudden burst of a pipe inside the house is. The same would have happened if the drain hose from the refrigerator or water heater had deteriorated, or with a leak from the washing machine. If any of these damages is the cause of the appearance of mold, the standard insurance covers its eradication in the terms included in the policy.
But if the mold growth was the result of the owner’s negligence, it would not be covered by a standard policy. For example, if the mold appears as a result of poor ventilation in a room, or after leaving a window open where water entered, or if the water comes from a leak in an old and neglected roof.
Mold that occurs after a property floods following a cyclone or major storm is also not covered. In this case, to be covered, a flood coverage would be necessary. After returning from vacation, you find mold in your home: does insurance cover it?
