How do you know if you qualify for Obamacare? The federal government subsidizes health plans operating under Obamacare to help families access affordable medical services. This subsidy is provided as a tax credit based on the household’s Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI).
To qualify for this subsidy, a family’s MAGI must fall between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Those earning below 100% of the FPL are assisted through other programs.
When you speak with your insurance agent to determine your eligibility for Obamacare, they’ll first check your projected income for the year.
Specifically, in 2025, to receive a subsidy under the Affordable Care Act, an individual should have a minimum income of $15,060 (100% of the FPL) and a maximum of $60,240 (400% of the FPL). For two people to qualify, their income should range from $20,440 to $81,760; for three people, between $25,820 and $113,280; for a household of four, the income should fall between $31,200 and $124,800. The lower the income, the greater the subsidy. For example, those earning up to 150% of the FPL would pay $0 for their monthly health insurance premium.
How is MAGI calculated?
Calculating MAGI is a straightforward process that involves two simple steps:
1. Calculate Adjusted Gross Income (AGI): Sum all your income and any deductions; the result is your AGI. If you filed taxes last year and your income hasn’t changed, you can find your AGI on line 11 of your Form 1040.
2. Adjust the AGI to get MAGI: Add any foreign income, tax-exempt interest from student loans, retirement income, and Social Security benefits to the AGI, even if they aren’t taxable. As a result, your MAGI will be equal to or greater than your AGI.
It’s important to note that for most people, the primary reference for MAGI calculation will be line 11 of the IRS Form 1040. Additionally, while MAGI doesn’t explicitly appear on your tax return, understanding this process will make you feel more informed and knowledgeable.
With this information, you’ll be well-prepared to discuss your income projections for 2025 with your insurance agent, who will provide you with the necessary guidance and support.
To avoid missing out on this valuable opportunity for health insurance subsidies, it’s crucial to be aware of the Obamacare enrollment period, which runs from November 1 to January 15, 2025.
