Ahead of the 2025 boating season, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced the formation of a temporary task force focused on boater safety and education for responsible use of the bay.

This initiative, created in collaboration with the Lucy Fernández Foundation, aims to develop recommendations to strengthen safety in Biscayne Bay and other navigable waters in the county.

“Through this task force, we’re empowering trusted community voices and local experts to help us make our waters safer for everyone,” said Levine Cava. “When residents and visitors navigate responsibly, they protect two of our greatest assets: our people and our environment.”

The group will include eight members, including representatives from the Lucy Fernández and Mónica Burguera Foundations—established by families of boating accident victims—along with the Key Biscayne Community Foundation, State Attorney Katherine Fernández Rundle’s office, the commercial and recreational boating sectors, and experts in boating safety and education.

High Incident Rate

According to Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), there were 659 boating accidents and 59 related deaths in 2023 statewide—many in Miami-Dade waters. This rise in incidents has led the community to demand better prevention and awareness.

“In honor of Lucy Fernández and other lives lost in preventable tragedies, our foundation has worked tirelessly to promote boater safety,” said Andy Fernández, spokesperson for the foundation. “This is a unique opportunity to create meaningful local change and ensure safer waters for all.”

Meetings will be public, and all records will be maintained in accordance with Florida’s transparency laws. Once their work is complete, the task force will present its recommendations to the mayor’s office, which will consider further steps to improve boating safety and avoid future tragedies.

The boating season begins on Memorial Day—May 26, 2025—and runs through Labor Day, which falls on September 1, 2025.

Take Action Before It’s Too Late

Florida has one of the highest concentrations of recreational and commercial boats in the nation, increasing the likelihood of accidents. You don’t need to wait for official recommendations to protect your boat, your family, and your finances. One of the smartest steps you can take is to secure comprehensive boat insurance.

The Risks

During peak season, when boating traffic and the risk of collisions, groundings, theft, or mechanical failures rise sharply, the right boat insurance policy makes all the difference. Proper coverage provides financial protection for third-party damages, covers legal costs if needed, and includes on-water assistance—which is critical during times of high demand. This ensures peace of mind and a safer experience for everyone onboard.

What Coverage Should a Florida Boat Insurance Policy Include?

Typical boat insurance in Florida should offer liability coverage, property damage protection, personal injury coverage, towing and emergency assistance, and spill liability.
