How to Prepare Your Home and Homeowners Insurance for Hurricane Season

Before hurricane season begins, it’s the perfect time to protect your home against high winds and heavy rains.

Hurricane season runs from Sunday, June 1 through November 30, 2025.

Check Your Insurance Policy

Our first recommendation is to review your homeowners insurance and ensure you have the proper coverage in place to protect your property from wind and water damage.

Inspect the Roof

Your roof is your home’s first line of defense. It must withstand intense rain, strong winds, and flying debris. Visually inspect it for signs of damage, missing shingles, or cracks.

Also, check that gutters are clean and downspouts direct water away from your foundation.

Secure Windows and Doors

Windows and doors—especially garage doors—are vulnerable points. If wind enters through a large opening, it can damage the entire house.

Install impact-resistant windows and doors, and make sure your main door opens outward for better wind resistance. If you don’t have impact windows, keep storm shutters ready.

Trim Trees Near Your Home

Healthy, well-positioned trees can act as windbreaks, but large or unhealthy trees pose serious risks.

Have a certified company prune your trees before hurricane season. Avoid removing more than 25% of the canopy and never cut roots. Focus on interior branches to allow wind to pass through. Don’t forget to remove leftover debris—it could turn into dangerous projectiles during a storm.

If any trees are near power lines, contact your utility provider or city services to handle the trimming safely.

Review Your Homeowners Insurance

If you’re unsure whether your homeowners insurance provides enough protection, or you believe your coverage is outdated, now is the time to act.
