How much do I need to know about dental insurance? Prevention is key to maintaining good oral health. That\’s why it\’s important to brush your teeth at least three times a day and visit the dentist at least once a year. Among preventive measures, having dental insurance that protects you from the high costs of unexpected and routine dental procedures is very important.
Some people take out dental insurance and don’t understand the meaning of 100-80-50 that appears in the coverage and get confused with the deductible and annual maximum.
The three numbers have a very simple explanation. 100% means coverage for preventive and routine care, such as cleanings and exams. 80% refers to coverage for basic procedures, crowns, and fillings. Likewise, 50% is coverage for more expensive and invasive treatments, such as root canals, surgeries, and implants, among others.
As you can see, insurance places its greatest emphasis on preventive care, covering 100% of the cost of such treatments.
On the other hand, the deductible is the money that the plan beneficiary must pay before the insurer takes care of the coverage as stated in the contract. For example, if the contract indicates that the annual deductible is $100, it means that certain coverages will not be operational until that $100 deductible is paid. Put simply, in the first treatments of the year, part of your bill will go towards paying the deductible and the other towards the treatment. After you have paid the full amount of the corresponding annual deductible, the insurer will cover all treatments as stated in the contract until you reach the annual coverage maximum.
It\’s worth noting that most plans do not require deductible payments when using preventive treatments such as annual exams, cleanings, and fluoride treatments.
The annual maximum is another important part of dental insurance. Let’s imagine that your contract says that the annual maximum is $5,000. It means that this will be the maximum amount that the insurer commits to spend on you during the year in terms of coverage.
Both the deductible and the annual maximum amount are renewed each year. An important piece of information to get the most out of dental insurance.
