Tips for driving a truck when there is snow

Tips for driving a truck on snowy roads. After a long week of work, our usual group of friends gathered, but Alberto was missing. When we asked about him, his wife explained that he had been stuck on a road in Texas for two days. “He was loaded with flowers for the Austin airport, but with these snowstorms he hasn’t been able to keep going.”

Transporting goods across the geography of the United States is not an easy task. Even less so in winter, when half of the roads are covered in snow.

When driving a truck in adverse weather conditions, you must be cautious and take preventive measures.

The first is to decide when conditions are not safe, either because of poor visibility or if there is a lot of ice, which means it’s time to stop and wait for better conditions.

If you can continue your route, you need to drive at a safe speed. Many times it’s preferable to drive below the allowed limit to maintain full control of the truck. The cargo can wait.

Another tip is to maintain distance from other vehicles. It’s preferable to travel alone, away from other cars to avoid being involved in any accidents caused by weather conditions.

Before leaving, you should gather a few bags of sand, the kind that is sold for cats to use as a litter box. If you have to stop because it’s too cold, keep in mind that the heat from the wheels can melt the snow around them and this water, when it cools again, turns into ice. Therefore, it’s recommended that when you stop, you should spread sand under the drive wheels of your truck, so that when you decide to start again, you have more traction and don’t skid on the ice.

Old truckers recommend adding a little brake antifreeze fluid to the windshield wiper container. When the glass gets dirty, heat it up for a minute before turning on the wipers.

You should check that the trailer tires rotate correctly, keep the fuel tanks full, and carry a hammer and spatula in case the air tanks freeze.

Before hitting the road, it’s very important to make sure that all systems are in optimal working condition.
