What’s the best way to protect my home? A few days ago, I was chatting with some friends when the topic of guns came up. One proudly shared that he had just bought a pistol to protect his home.
“If someone tries to break into my property, they’ll regret it,” he said. This man, who’s worked hard to put a roof over his family’s head, felt confident in his decision.
But I asked him, “What do you have that’s so valuable that you’d be willing to shoot someone over it?”
“It’s not about the price of things,” he replied firmly. “Everything in my house is mine. I earned it, and no one has the right to take it away.”
I told him, “Your homeowner’s insurance can protect you just like that pistol.” He looked at me, puzzled.
“If someone breaks into your home, your only concern should be getting your family to safety. Your homeowner’s insurance could cover everything else, whether it’s stolen or damaged.”
“All you need to do is keep your inventory updated. If you buy a new computer or an expensive appliance, let your insurance agent know so it can be added to your policy.”
To drive the point home, I added, “Sometimes, insurance works even better than a gun. If a thief steals your pistol, that could be covered under your homeowner’s policy. And if God forbid, the gun accidentally goes off and injures someone, your homeowner’s insurance might protect you against potential lawsuits.”
