August is approaching, roll up your pants and secure your home. Florida is not only surrounded by vast bodies of water, it’s like a floating pier. Beneath its ground lies a vast network of aquifers that interconnect with its numerous lakes, springs, and the Everglades. Additionally, the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean wash over its long coasts.

Such a state, to make matters worse, is located in one of the most hurricane-prone regions in the world and is hit by numerous floods every year. Here we present the four worst floods in Florida.

In the eighth month of 2008, the Imperial River in Bonita Springs, located in Lee County, overflowed after heavy rainfall from a tropical storm. Over 1,700 residents of the area were forced to evacuate their homes in canoes and boats to seek shelter in safer places.

That same year, in August, Tropical Storm Fay, after passing through the Caribbean, battered Everglades City, where it caused a 5-foot-high flood that virtually submerged this stronghold of tourism and fishing.

Another enclave in Florida severely affected by floodwaters was Palm Beach in October 1999, when Hurricane Irene struck and caused major flooding. It is estimated that this storm caused over 600 million in losses, and the waters remained on the streets for several weeks. The same hurricane also flooded extensive areas of Miami-Dade and Broward.

The largest remembered flood occurred in Everglades City in September 1960. The destructive power of Hurricane Donna wreaked havoc on this Florida town and caused an unprecedented flood. The waters reached 8 feet in height, and houses remained submerged for about 10 hours. Many residents recall having water up to their waist while on the first floor of some buildings. 50% of the buildings were destroyed by the floodwaters.
